Industry Insider: Casey Sullivan

Long before Casey Sullivan co-founded an online destination for buying and consigning fine and estate jewelry, she’d identified being successful with having a career in … finance. As an associate with a global banking firm, she jet-setted around the world, meeting people in various professions doing what they were truly passionate about—and she decided it was time for her to do the same. After she spent three years with LVMH’s travel retail business, DFS Group, in Hong Kong, her entrepreneurial spirit—which dates back to high school, when she ran a successful pearl-buying business—led her to New York City, where she signed on as co-founder and head of marketing for Gleem & Co. “Gleem has definitely upped my style game,” she says. “The jewelry I see every day is simply incredible and I love sharing it with the world.” —Jennifer Henderson

Her style history: “I absolutely refused to go to preschool without red shoes and I insisted on sleeping with a hair bow on to match my pajamas. I was about four at the time, but I definitely had strong opinions on fashion.”

Her motivation: “I’ve always wanted to succeed in whatever I was doing, whether it was stringing and selling pearl necklaces, working in finance, or building relationships. I am very type A in that sense.”

Her highlight: “Leaving my finance job in Paris to take another in fashion with DFS Group, in Hong Kong. It wasn’t comfortable making such a significant change as switching my career and moving countries, but I knew I needed to make the jump to fashion. I am so glad I did.”

Her success tip: “A mentor recommended the following technique: Every evening, I write down my number-one most important task for the following day. When I wake up, before checking email or reviewing any to-do list, I set out to complete that number-one task. The idea is that you have a diminishing amount of motivation throughout the day, so you should execute your most important or creative tasks first.”

Her look: “I am a New England girl at heart, so my style always has a classic feel. I also believe in the power of a good blowout and makeup (see: Glamsquad), a great party dress, and fabulous jewelry. You’ve got to dress to impress.”

Her must-haves: “Homemade cold-brew coffee, coconut oil, cozy sweaters, running shoes, iTunes radio, Snapchat filters, Needles No More™ by Dr. Brandt Skincare eye cream, Citibike, black booties, statement earrings, cocktail rings, the dog I don’t have yet, fresh flowers (at all times), perfectly fitting Saturday jeans, avocado smash, girls’ dinners, and date nights.”

Her blog: “Before launching FemmBoss, I didn’t think there was a strong female voice in the world of fashion-tech. So I figured that as I learned about the industry as it develops, I could document the journey and speak with some amazingly interesting people along the way. I love it.”

Her social circle: “Stylecaster’s is a friend and has incredible style. VivaLuxury has an edginess I love and features beautiful jewelry. I love the Insta feed . Happily Grey has my favorite overall aesthetic. I met recently, and she’s so smart and stylish, which of course, inspires me, too. Also, Medium and Pocket are definitely helpful in channeling and organizing content I like to read.”

Her true beauty: “When you feel like the best version of yourself because of your accomplishments. Having great personal confidence in your look on any given day radiates a beauty no one can deny.”

Her must-sees: “Positano, Italy, is the most romantic place on earth; I love staying at Le Sirenuse. Hvar, Croatia, is the most fun. Luang Prabang, in Laos, is a cool town to relax in, and ballooning over Bagan, in Myanmar, is an incredible adventure. And my hometown of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is the perfect escape in the summertime.”

Her future: “Next up for Gleem will be some amazing partnerships I cannot wait to announce. For me, the world is my oyster—and I love oysters.”
