Abbey Drucker received her first camera (pink and plastic) at age seven. Since then, she’s had a passion for creating images that has surpassed her interest in just about everything else—including volleyball and staying warm (see below). She’s now a seasoned photographer who regularly shoots celebs, like Emma Stone and Eddie Vedder; fashion for the likes of Vogue and Elle; and campaigns for brands such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Nike. “Every time I fly somewhere for a job, I think about how lucky I am to do what I love for a living.” —Jennifer Henderson
Her style story: “I was always into arts and crafts, but when I got my first camera, I had so much fun. I would pose my dolls, pets, family, friends. My first ‘fashion’ shoot was when I was 16. My dad drove my friends and I to the beach, in winter, where I dressed them in vintage outfits and set them up in the freezing cold.”
Her work ethic: “Work hard and don’t give up.”
Her DNA: “When I was a kid, I remember my grandfather shooting Polaroids of my family every time we got together. We all thought it was a casual hobby. I never knew his true talent until he passed away and I came across a collection of his private photos from the 1950s and 60s of he and his friends when they were young. His composition and eye for a strong, unique shot was really impressive.
Her journey: “I received a contract at Teen Vogue when I was 21. I went from fun, artsy editorials to commercial, high-end fashion projects. I traveled to Europe for the collections; shot celebrity portraits at Sundance; and met Anna Wintour for the first time outside the Eiffel Tower. Everything happened so fast and all at once. After that year, I could handle anything, which good because photo shoots come along quickly and you’ve got to be ready.”
Her success secret: “Believe in yourself. Stay true to what feels right. Listen to constructive criticism. Always be open to growth. Find balance in your life—and breathe deeply.”
Her muse: “I’ve always loved working with women and the connection we all have through sisterhood, motherhood, strength, vulnerability, and sensuality. I have an appreciation for women who balance different roles and are able to celebrate their uniquely beautiful bodies.”
Her look: “Vintage, black, simple. For meetings, I’m black pants and a button-down with a blazer and heels. For shoots, it’s black jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers. Off duty, I like short-shorts or a high-wasted skirt with a tank top or tee.”
Her beauty: “Confidence, kindness, and soft skin. My grandmother was one of the most beautiful women I’ve known.”
Her must-haves: “They are definitely seasonal. For summer, it’s road trips, Catskill mountain weekends, girl time, date nights, tacos, strong coffee, good tea, yoga, herbal remedies, natural makeup, SPF beach days, and family time.”
Her practice: “Yoga and meditation have transformed my life. If you are new to it, and interested, I recommend starting with five minutes of guided meditation or simple yoga a day.”
Her next step: “I’m always exploring different ways to create and connect with women-figure studies through photography. This summer, I’m launching new fitness and lingerie projects along with a new director’s reel and spending as much time as possible outside.”
