Lola Langusta gives the term “multi-hyphenate” new meaning: a successful global D.J., a music producer and performer, a stylist and creative consultant, a blogger, and an emerging fashion designer, she is redefining what it means be an artist in the digital age. “I always like to deliver the unexpected when it comes to the music I play and get an understanding of the crowd. It’s that curation of sound and storytelling that makes what I do so important.” —Jennifer Henderson
Her fashion history: “I was born a fashion baby, and not because I was surrounded by it, but because I was drawn to it. I grew up with very little so I needed to be creative, and I did my best to mock the trends with thrift-store finds. I decided if I couldn’t walk the runway, I’d do the hair, makeup, styling, and designing instead.”
Her D.J. aesthetic: “I love everything—world, African psychedelic, house, dance, hip-hop, you name it—but it has to have soul, it has to tell a story. I’m also huge on lyrics and I can’t play something that degrades women or has a negative connotation. People don’t realize what they’re listening to; just because it has a good beat doesn’t mean it’s a good song.”
Her blog: “I started Covet Cult as an inspirational blog in conjunction with my life as a D.J., fashion ‘feign,’ and creative. It’s my portfolio. I also wanted to create a platform where I could share the accomplishments of my fellow artists. I was exhausted by all the ‘selfie’ blogs and wanted to create something deeper that educated, inspired, and praised others’ contributions.”
Her personal style: “It changes with everyday and every gig, but I mostly wear vintage and prefer a sophisticated 70s glam or boho-chic style.”
Her must-haves: “My computer and phone; rose oil for my body; red lipstick from Sephora; and my passport.”
Her beauty: “Happiness with everything you are and have. It’s the ultimate goal and those who find it radiate like no other.”
Her social skew: “. My go-to accounts are , for culture and inspiration, and , one of my favorite photographers who I hope to work with someday.”
Her inspiration: “I draw my inspiration from everywhere: colors and sounds, strangers and friends. I’m inspired equally by the past and present, although I really like to dive into the archives for ideas: Federico Fellini for film; LCD Soundsystem and The Movement for music; and Bianca Jagger for style.”
Her maxims: “I’ve got two. First, ‘What you do for yourself dies with you; what you do for others lives immortal.” —Alfred Pine. And, ‘Any asshole can chase a skirt, art takes discipline.’ —Charles Bukowski.”
Her next step: “I’m looking forward to deejaying next month in the Philippines and Hong Kong; wrapping up an EP with the hopes of a summer launch; and debuting my capsule collection.”
